Live Below The Line 2012

Last May I joined thousands of people around the world through taking part in an innovative, inspiring and challenging campaign – Live Below The Line.

The challenge? Spend 5 days feeding yourself with £1 a day – the UK equivalent of the extreme poverty line.

What’s the point? It gives a glimpse into the lives of 1.4 billion people who have no choice but to live below the line every day – and who have to make £1 cover a lot more than food…Think about that number: 1.4 billion people.

The 1.4 billion people became the inspiration for the Global Poverty Project‘s educational and engaging presentation 1.4 Billion Reasons, which I had the pleasure of experiencing for myself last year and I would highly recommend seeking out a local presentation to anyone wanting to know more about the fight against extreme poverty.

How are we to understand what it is like to live in extreme poverty if we are not experiencing it for ourselves? That is the beauty of Live Below The Line……for a week you experience the tiniest glimpse of the struggle facing 1.4 billion people every day.

Why £1? The £1 per day is the UK equivalent of the extreme poverty line, and the reality is that there are people living off £1 per day in the UK too. Extreme poverty is not limited to famine-stricken, war-torn countries. There are people living below the extreme poverty line in every country in the world.

Last year, I took the challenge and fed and watered myself with £1 per day for 5 days. Five days of never feeling quite full. Five days of food for survival only, not for taste, flavour or excitement. Five days of no variety, choice, or options. Five days only – compared to a lifetime for many people.

This year the official Live Below The Line week is running from 7th-11th May.

I am adding an additional week on to the challenge for myself and I will be blogging about my experience here at agirlcalledlynsey. I will be living below the line from 30th April until 11th May. 12 days. £12.

It doesn’t have to be that way! £1 a day, especially if it’s £2 for a couple, can put good quality, fresh and very tasty food on the table. You just have to be a little bit clever about it, avoid all pre-made/processed food, avoid supermarkets for fresh food and cook from scratch. It just takes a little thought and planning.
