And the greatest of these….

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails……

…….And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (From 1 Corinthians 13)

I find Valentine’s Day to be a bit of a bizarre, over-commercialised, Hallmark card kind of day, that is irritating by the sheer indication that showing someone you love them should only happen once a year. That we should only put effort into our relationships on that one day of the year.

I was discussing what love meant with the children in my class. Children’s definitions are always beautiful. They compare love with their parents forgiving them when they’ve done something wrong, with their older sibling taking the time to help them with their homework, with the smile on their aunt’s face when she looks at her husband, with me as their teacher taking time to explain something to them. Love, to children, is not about romance. It’s about care and kindness and taking the time to do something for another person.

One of my favourite parts of the chapter from 1 Corinthians is the thought that ‘Love Endures All Things’. Love means ‘no matter what’. Love means ‘even when things are difficult’. Love means ‘I’m always going to be there for you’.

Love does not mean Hallmark cards and packed restaurants with over-priced meals.
